Question to longtime Symbian OS users: why aren't menu folders/items in alphabetical order?

in the menu? I can't see how that would make any sense, personally. Though, come to think of it, there's not currently much sense in the ordering, anyways.

One thing that always bothered me, however, is that when choosing your active standby apps, those aren't in alphabetical order, and they should be.

disagree there ... I want them in my order.

list view should be alpha, but icon is what you want / need.

List view doesn't change them to alpha order. I agree that having them in an any order would be great; but there seems no logic to the default order.

I'd like aphabetical as it would be a nice option to do a list view and then go to an app/set of apps by letter (a feature i liked on the Treo a lot).

oh man, if you're not using Handy Taskman, I'm surprised! I won't touch an S60 without it, really.

I am using an N75, does it really need such a "powerful" solution.

Dude, handy taskman should be standard on an s60, regardless of the power

It also lets you kill apps that get stuck, and on the n75, lets you kill the music player

Nice program; doesn't adjust apps alphabetically though.

i think by default they are ordered depending on what the device's focus is, for example, in a music device, the music player (or music folder) will be the icon selected when you go into the apps menu. a photo device, the camera app? a video device, the gallery? on my E90 it's the messaging app. and other related apps are just a keystroke away (using the number keypad that corresponds to the grid position of icon). of course, you can always change the order to fit your liking.

Interesting. On the n75 the gallery is the default but isn't this a music device?

I've never thought there was any logic to the default menu configuration on S60s.

or perhaps the music player is already assigned to one of the softkeys on the idle screen? i just know it's not entirely random how the icons are placed, each product has their own logic and reasoning of ordering them.

The music player is defaut on the idele screen yes; the gallery when you go into Applications. I kinda understand, but it still would throw me for a loop if I weren't the persistant type.

Even having these seeminly random views, there should be an option to alpha listen them. That seems more logical to have than not have.

True, it will be nice to at least have that as an option, but also keep in mind that "alphabetical order" doesn't make sense in certain languages such as chinese :)

Other languages, understandable. Just wondering why that logic isn't in those lanugages where it does make sense.

Handy Taskman shows me that when nothing by stndby is running that I have just a tick over 6MB of RAM, ouch - I see my web browsing issues plainly now.

The illogic logic of the default apps is only compounded by the fact none can be changed. :-(
